Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal in Nairobi, Kenya

Fractional lasers are a type of laser technology used in various dermatological and cosmetic procedures. Unlike traditional lasers that treat the entire skin surface, fractional lasers target only a fraction or a specific area of the skin, leaving surrounding tissues unaffected. This approach promotes faster healing and reduces downtime for our clients.

Fractional Lasers Tattoo Removal

Fractional lasers can be used for tattoo removal, particularly when dealing with stubborn or multicolored tattoos. The process involves using fractional laser technology to break down the ink particles within the skin, making them easier for the body to eliminate. Here’s how fractional lasers are typically applied in tattoo removal:

Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal Principle of Action

The principle of action for fractional laser tattoo removal is based on the concept of selective photothermolysis, which is a technique that uses laser energy to target specific pigments within the skin. Here’s how fractional laser tattoo removal works:

  • Laser Penetration:
    – Fractional lasers emit high-intensity light energy in the form of pulses.
    – The laser light is absorbed by the tattoo pigments present in the skin.
  • Selective Photothermolysis:
    – Selective photothermolysis refers to the ability of the laser to selectively target and heat specific chromophores (color-absorbing molecules) without damaging the surrounding tissues.
    – In the context of tattoo removal, the chromophores are the ink particles within the skin.
  • Breaking Down Ink Particles:
    – The intense energy from the fractional laser is absorbed by the tattoo pigments, causing them to heat up rapidly.
    – This rapid heating results in the fragmentation or breakdown of the larger ink particles into smaller fragments.
  • Microscopic Thermal Channels:
    – Fractional lasers create microscopic thermal channels or columns in the skin.
    – The laser energy is delivered in a fractionated pattern, targeting only a portion of the skin in each treatment session.

Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal Process

The fractional laser tattoo removal process is a multi-step procedure that involves the use of laser technology to break down and gradually eliminate tattoo pigments from the skin. Here is a general overview of the steps involved in fractional laser tattoo removal:

  • Consultation:
    – Before undergoing fractional laser tattoo removal, our clients usually have a consultation with one of our qualified laser specialists at Rebel Inks Tattoos, Tattoo Removal, and Body Piercings.
    – Our specialist assesses the tattoo, skin type, and any potential contraindications to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
  • Skin Preparation: On the day of the procedure, the skin in the treatment area will be cleansed, and a topical anesthetic or numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort during the treatment.
  • Laser Settings and Calibration:
    – The laser device is set to emit specific wavelengths of light based on the colors of the tattoo pigments.
    – The energy levels, pulse duration, and other parameters are calibrated to achieve optimal results while minimizing the risk of side effects.
  • Fractional Laser Treatment:
    – The fractional laser is applied to the tattooed area in a controlled manner.
    – The laser creates microscopic columns or channels of thermal damage within the skin, targeting the tattoo pigments.
  • Selective Photothermolysis:
    – The laser energy is absorbed by the tattoo pigments, leading to their rapid heating.
    – Selective photothermolysis ensures that the thermal damage is confined to the tattoo pigments, sparing the surrounding tissues.
  • Stimulation of Healing Response:
    – The controlled thermal damage induced by the laser stimulates the body’s natural healing response.
    – Over the following days and weeks, the skin begins to heal, and the immune system works to eliminate the fragmented ink particles.
  • Post-Treatment Care:
    – After the fractional laser treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, and, in some cases, blistering.
    – Our specialist provides post-treatment care instructions, which may include the application of prescribed ointments and the use of sun protection to aid in the healing process.
  • Multiple Sessions:
    – Fractional laser tattoo removal typically requires multiple sessions to achieve the desired results.
    – The sessions are spaced several weeks apart to allow for adequate healing and to target different layers of ink.
  • Assessment and Adjustments:
    – Throughout the course of treatment, our specialist assesses the progress and may make adjustments to the laser settings if necessary.
    – The number of sessions needed depends on factors such as the size, colors, and depth of the tattoo.
  • Follow-up and Aftercare:
    – Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor healing progress and discuss any concerns.

At Rebel Inks Tattoos, Tattoo Removal, and Body Piercings we often advise our clients to follow proper aftercare instructions, which may include avoiding sun exposure and using recommended skincare products.

It’s important to note that individual experiences may vary, and the success of fractional laser tattoo removal depends on factors such as the type of ink used, colors in the tattoo, and the individual’s skin characteristics. Consulting with a qualified professional is crucial to determine the most appropriate treatment plan and manage expectations regarding the outcome.

Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal Mechanism

Fractional laser tattoo removal works through a process called selective photothermolysis, involving the targeted application of laser energy to break down tattoo pigments. Here’s a more detailed explanation of the mechanism:

  • Laser Absorption by Chromophores:
    – The laser emits high-energy light at specific wavelengths.
    – Tattoo pigments in the skin, known as chromophores, absorb this light energy.
  • Selective Photothermolysis:
    – Selective photothermolysis refers to the selective targeting of specific chromophores without causing damage to surrounding tissues.
    – The laser is carefully tuned to match the absorption characteristics of the tattoo pigments.
  • Rapid Heating of Tattoo Pigments:
    – When the tattoo pigments absorb the laser energy, they undergo rapid heating.
    – This intense heat causes the tattoo pigments to fragment into smaller particles.
  • Microscopic Thermal Zones:
    – Instead of treating the entire skin surface, fractional lasers create microscopic treatment zones within the skin.
    – These zones are surrounded by untreated tissue, allowing for quicker healing and minimizing the risk of adverse effects.
  • Stimulation of Collagen Production:
    – The controlled thermal injury caused by the laser also stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that is essential for skin structure and elasticity.
    – Collagen production helps in the natural healing process and contributes to improved skin texture.
  • Immune System Response:
    – The fragmented tattoo pigments are recognized by the body’s immune system as foreign particles.
    – The immune system works to clear away these particles through the lymphatic system over time.
  • Gradual Fading of the Tattoo:
    – As the immune system removes the fragmented ink particles, the tattoo gradually fades.
    – Multiple treatment sessions are often required to address different layers and colors of the tattoo pigments.
  • Controlled Tissue Ablation (if ablative):
    – In the case of ablative fractional lasers, a fraction of the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) is intentionally removed.
    – This controlled tissue ablation stimulates skin renewal and may be more effective for certain types of tattoos.
  • Healing Process:
    – Following the fractional laser treatment, the skin undergoes a healing process.
    – Some of our clients often experience temporary redness, swelling, and peeling, which typically subside over a period of days to weeks.
  • Repeat Sessions:
    – Fractional laser tattoo removal is usually performed in a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart.
    – The repeated sessions allow for the gradual elimination of tattoo pigments and promote optimal healing.

The mechanism of fractional laser tattoo removal is designed to selectively target and break down tattoo pigments while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. The process leverages the body’s natural healing abilities to gradually fade and eliminate the tattoo. The success of the treatment depends on various factors, including the type of laser used, the characteristics of the tattoo, and individual skin factors.

Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal Selective Photothermolysis

Selective photothermolysis is a fundamental principle in laser-based medical and cosmetic procedures, including fractional laser tattoo removal. This principle is based on the idea of selectively targeting specific chromophores within tissues using appropriate wavelengths of light. Here’s how selective photothermolysis applies to fractional laser tattoo removal:

  • Chromophores in Tattoo Removal:
    – Chromophores are molecules or particles within the skin that absorb light at specific wavelengths.
    – In the context of tattoo removal, the chromophores are the colored pigments in the tattoo ink.
  • Matching Wavelengths:
    – Laser devices are designed to emit light at specific wavelengths that are absorbed strongly by the target chromophores (tattoo pigments) while minimally affecting surrounding tissues.
    – The choice of laser wavelength depends on the colors of the tattoo pigments, as different colors absorb light at different wavelengths.
  • Absorption of Laser Energy:
    – When the laser light is applied to the skin, the tattoo pigments absorb the energy from the laser.
    – The energy is absorbed preferentially by the targeted chromophores, causing them to heat up.
  • Rapid Heating and Thermal Damage:
    – The rapid absorption of laser energy leads to a quick rise in temperature within the target area.
    – This heating causes thermal damage to the tattoo pigments, leading to their fragmentation.
  • Spatial and Temporal Constraints:
    – Selective photothermolysis involves carefully choosing the right combination of wavelength, pulse duration, and energy levels to ensure that the thermal damage is confined to the target chromophores.
    – Spatial and temporal constraints are crucial to prevent collateral damage to surrounding tissues.

Fractional Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare

After undergoing fractional laser tattoo removal, proper aftercare is crucial to promote healing, minimize potential side effects, and achieve optimal results. Here are some general guidelines for fractional laser tattoo removal aftercare:

  • Follow Specialist’s Instructions: At Rebel Inks Tattoos, Tattoo Removal, and Body Piercings we highly advice our clients to strictly follow the aftercare instructions provided by our treating specialist..
  • Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the treated area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleansers.
  • Apply Prescribed Ointments: If our specialist recommends any topical ointments or creams, apply them as directed to aid in the healing process.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure:
    – Protect the treated area from direct sunlight. Use sunscreen with a high SPF, and cover the area with clothing or a bandage if needed.
    – Sun exposure can increase the risk of complications and affect the healing process.
  • Avoid Scratching or Picking: Do not scratch, pick, or rub the treated area. This can lead to infection, scarring, or other complications.
  • Keep the Area Moisturized: Applying a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer can help keep the skin hydrated and reduce dryness or peeling.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support overall skin health and promote healing.
  • Avoid Hot Baths or Saunas: Steer clear of hot baths, saunas, and activities that may cause excessive sweating until the treated area has fully healed.
  • Use Gentle Cleansing: When washing the treated area, use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing.
  • Watch for Signs of Infection:
    – Monitor the treated area for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or the presence of pus.
    – If signs of infection occur, contact our specialist promptly.
  • Follow-up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with the specialist to assess healing progress and discuss further treatments if needed.
  • Avoid Harsh Skincare Products: Avoid using harsh skincare products, especially those containing strong acids or active ingredients, until the skin has fully healed.
  • Avoid Physical Exertion: Refrain from intense physical activities, heavy lifting, or anything that may cause excessive sweating for a few days after the treatment.
  • Be Patient: Healing times can vary, and it’s essential to be patient. Complete healing may take several weeks, and multiple sessions may be required for optimal results.

If there are any concerns or if unexpected side effects occur during the healing process, it is important to contact our treating specialist promptly. Every individual may have specific aftercare instructions tailored to their skin type and the specifics of their tattoo removal treatment, so following the guidance of our professionals is crucial for the best outcomes.

I went to Eric for the first time to get help with an earring infection I couldn’t get rid of for months. I quickly got an appointment. He took time to listen to my concerns and previous treatments. He then recommended we try a different approach, changing the piercing and treating it as it was fresh. He gave great advise on how to clean and which care products to use. Throughout the whole session he was very friendly, considerate and knowledgeable. The weeks after he was checking in on how the piercing was doing. The infection is now gone. I would definitely recommend!
